Frequently Asked Questions

Wanna check out W.A.L.K.? You probably have a few questions before you drop by. We’ve included a list of our most frequently asked questions below to help you get to know us better. Don’t see what you need? Email us!

What is W.A.L.K.?

W.A.L.K. is Iowa’s only multipurpose, indoor and outdoor canine community focused on exercise, education, wellness, and fun. It’s a place where people and pets can gather, play, work, learn, exercise, eat, and relax together year-round. Our goal is for all of our visitors—two-legged and four legged—to walk away a little healthier and a little happier each time they visit.

Where is W.A.L.K. located?

Our future home will be just off Exit 246 on Interstate 80 at 2513 Highlander Place in Iowa City, Iowa. We are a block from Dodge Street/Highway 1. That’s right….we have dogs just off Dodge.

When will you formally open your doors?

Stay tuned for updates coming soon.

What kinds of things can my dog and I do at W.A.L.K.?

W.A.L.K. has a staff supervised off-leash area where dogs can play and socialize, as well as multiple on-leash, indoor and outdoor walking areas. Our agility practice courses are equipped with tubes, a teeter-totter, and other fun features for your dog to explore. We also have a swimming and diving pool for dogs who love the water. After a few hours of fun, you and your canine companion can relax, unwind, and grab a bite to eat.

What are your membership options?

We have a $5,000 Lifetime Membership that you can purchase online now. Learn more here.  We also have two Annual Packages you can reserve now. We are not accepting payment for these annual memberships yet. We will as we get closer to opening. But you can pledge your support by reserving one of these memberships today to show your interest in and support for W.A.L.K. See annual membership details here.

Do I have to be a member to visit?

You don’t have to be a member. You can buy a day pass or a punch card to visit either with your furry friend or just on your own.

How big is W.A.L.K.? Is it indoor and outdoor?

Our spacious facility is more than 30,000 square feet and offers indoor and outdoor options. Our elevated track, swimming pool and diving dock, agility, food, and retail spaces are all inside. We also have an outdoor off-leash space.

What if I’m traveling through Iowa City or staying at a local hotel and want to bring my dog for the day or for a few hours?

You are welcome as long as you purchase a day pass and can show proof of vaccinations. See the question below on required vaccinations.

Do I have to bring a dog to hang out?

Of course not! We welcome all dog lovers to come watch our canine and human visitors frolic and play. If you don’t have a dog, you can bring your laptop and get some work done at W.A.L.K., read a book, or socialize with friends. Our food area is always open to the public regardless of membership and our pet friendly co-lab work spaces are a perfect place to take care of business.

What type of co-working will you offer?

We will offer informal and formal co-working at W.A.L.K. If you just want to purchase a day pass or an annual pass and grab a chair and work here for a few hours, you can do that. If you are interested in a more formal co-working space, we will offer co-lab working spaces that offer everything from hourly rates to private offices and conference rooms. All of these spaces are designed to meet your remote working technology needs. While you work, your dog can have staff-supervised time in our off-leash area. And we’ll have food and drinks on-site so you can stay and play for an hour or two or work all day.

Is W.A.L.K. a dog park?

It’s better than a dog park. We are a place where your dog can play and socialize year round—rain or shine, hot or humid, flurries or polar vortex. Another key difference from a dog park is that we have trained staff on site at all times. They are here to keep an eye on your pup in the play areas and to make sure everyone is safe and well. Our facility is designed with both dogs and their humans in mind. The physical and mental well-being of the pups and people is always a top priority.

Is there a separate area for large and small dogs to play?

There is! We will have separate spaces in the off-leash area for small vs. large dog-breed dogs. We also will have staff present to supervise the play, so you can be confident that your dog is safe at all times.

Do you restrict certain breeds of dogs?

All breeds are welcome. We just ask that all owners use good judgment and keep their dogs on leashes or keep a leash handy in off-leash areas.

Can I host a special event at W.A.L.K.?

Yes! From field trips to birthday parties, educational events to seminars, we love hosting events at our facility. We have private rooms and areas to fit all types of events. Contact us to find out more about making your reservation.

Where do the dogs… do their business?

W.A.L.K. has a designated area for dogs to relieve themselves. If your dog has an accident outside of this area, we get it—accidents happen. We just ask that you clean up after your dog and notify staff so they can make sure the area is properly sanitized.

How is the facility cleaned and sanitized?

Our facility is cleaned and disinfected daily to keep both our canine and human visitors safe.

What other services does W.A.L.K. offer?

Dog washing services and dog supplies from local retailers are available for purchase.

Do I have to schedule my visit, or can I show up anytime?

We welcome visitors anytime. For your first visit, allow a little extra time so we can get to know your dog and make sure he or she is ready for our facility and up to date on shots.

Do you offer pets available for adoption?

We don’t. If you’re looking for an animal companion, we recommend visiting the Iowa City Animal Care and Adoption Center or one of our other local rescue organizations. In the future, we are exploring options to partner with local adoption and rescue organizations. We hope to host events to make it easier for dog and cat adoption. Stay tuned, Cat-erdays are on the way!

What if my dog isn’t dog friendly? Can I still bring him or her along to get out of the house?

For the safety of our canine and human visitors, we require all of our dogs to be properly socialized…..However, we understand dogs, like people, are not without their issues. We want to be as inclusive as possible, so if your dog may have some behavior issues, let us know. We partner with local pet schools and trainers to have special training courses that can help socialize your dog and help with the overall well-being of your pup. Once your dog passes the course, he or she can come back for membership.

Are you hiring?

W.A.L.K. is always looking for passionate animal lovers to join our team. We offer a variety of positions, from customer service staff to shift managers and supervisors to volunteers. Send us a note!

Is there anything W.A.L.K. doesn’t do?

While we are a multi-purpose dog center, there are a few things you won’t find at our facility. We are not:

  • A traditional dog park
  • A dog obedience school
  • A doggy daycare or boarding facility
  • A breeding facility
  • An animal rescue
  • A veterinary clinic
  • A dog licensing facility

If you’re looking for any of the services above, we’re happy to recommend a local business or organization.
